What's a bride to do when she wants more (or less) bridesmaids than her groom wants groomsmen? Well, for one, stop freaking out and start looking at the positives. Not only will you have all the girls (or boys) you adore by your side on your big day, but you also won't feel pressured into adding or subtracting people simply to ensure your numbers match. For brides-to-be with an uneven wedding party, here's how to strike the perfect balance seamlessly.Read More
The Castaway House in Islamorada is one of our favorite venues for events here in the upper keys. The property is well suited for both a large and small event. It has a huge beachfront overlooking the sparkling Atlantic Ocean with a white sandy walk-in beach, which as you may or may not know is a rare thing down here. It also has plenty of space for parking in the front and a shaded area on the beach for the ceremony. The house on the property is a super cute honeymoon cottage, that not only looks like a boat but actually is a boat! This property has a long history here in Islamorada making it a historic wedding venue. Here is a little bit about how this boat house came to be, a story told to me by Lisa Bradeen who is involved with the Islamorada Historical Society.
Clara Maw Downey first bought the boat and put it on her property of The Olney Inn. It then blew onto Preston Street during Hurricane Donna and Jim Gilmore (who had purchased the property already) dragged it on rollers to where it is today and used it as a winter house for his Family. Mr. Gilmore was from Kalamazoo, Michigan and was the owner of Gilmore/Foyt Racing Team, as in AJ Foyt, Indy Winner 3 times and owned Clear Channel stations and was big in the broadcasting industry. The Gilmore Family still owns the property today.
Mr. Gilmore was involved with the original World Wide Sportsman with George Hommell & The Green Turtle Inn. Doris Hommell was the caretaker of the property for many years. She bought the house that Joe & Debbie live in for $1.00 from Mr. Gilmore and turned it into a Flower/Nursery shop which was very successful in the 80's. I worked with Doris for 5 years during that time. It was a glorious time decorating all the homes & restaurants in Islamorada.
President Truman and his wife with their friend & guest, Edward R Morrow vacationed there in the late 50's. President Truman fished with Bucky Stark then. Mrs. Truman did not fish.
The property is for sale as of present for 5 million.

There are so many great wedding venues available in the Florida Keys. This week I would like to spotlight a couple of our favorite venues in the Upper Keys. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing an appropriate venue for your wedding. Before we get to our Spotlight Local Wedding Venues here are some things to consider when choosing a venue: 1. Your Wedding Style: Do you dream in tuxedos and ballgowns? Then choose a venue that will reflect this style it will save you money in the long run since you won't have to spend as much in transforming the space to suit you needs.
2. Size appropriate for you anticipated guest list: Expecting 300 people? Then be sure to check with your venue on their maximum capacity.
3. Ease of accessibility: When having a destination wedding you will want to take into consideration the proximity and availability of accommodations and goods and services for your guests.
One of our favorite locations here in the upper keys is Ocean Pointe Suites. It has 60 acres of property tucked away on the Oceanside in Tavernier. It is in close proximity to shopping and restaurants and boasts 170 spacious suites. This means that in most cases all of your guests will be able to stay on property. The pool will be one big family reunion! There is also a bar and restaurant on-site and boat dockage available.
The property also has a beautiful sandy beach perfect for a ceremony or even for the reception itself. There is also a covered space near the beach where many of the receptions are catered following a beach ceremony. The property has an affordable site fee and you get a lot for your money.
1. Covered space: A commodity down here for a beach wedding. Short of springing for a tent you won't find this anywhere else.
2. Fans: This space has built in ceiling fans, so clutch on a hot day down here.
3. Lighting: Lighting is also built into this space so another way to save.
4. Tables & Chairs: Depending on how many guests you have they can accommodate dinner seating for up to 40 people.
5. They take care of the bar: For a reasonable price your full bar service is covered. No guessing if you will run out of booze or hauling it all with you.
With all of these great points for this local venue, there is still more. It has an absolutely lovely view and the staff is friendly, accommodating and a pleasure to work with.
Here are some images from recent events at Ocean Pointe Suites.

This new Wedding venue has popped up on our radar and it is a great spot for an outdoor keys wedding. The property is located in Key Largo making it a bit easier of a journey from the airport for guests who may be traveling from out of town. It is waterfront and very spacious. The property itself has been in the same family for 6 generations and it one of the oldest examples of 1920's Florida Keys architecture. The homes on the property are full of character and hold vintage surprised around every corner. Here is the low down on the property's history.
This unique property is an unforgettable slice of 1920's Key Largo. Because of its size and location, Historic Shadow Point is very popular for weddings, family gatherings, and other special events. They have catered to guests from all over the world, and many come back year after year. The vintage Cottages are situated on a secluded, shady peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, with clear views of mangrove islands and abundant wildlife. Built in the 1900s by a sailing ship's captain, each house represents early Keys architecture from the pioneering times of Florida. The property was acquired by the same family who still owns it to this day. They have worked very hard over the generations to keep the houses as original as possible. The homes are decorated with pieces reflecting the years of being connected to the local waters. Their ancestor, Marvin D. Adams, is responsible for constructing the canal that bisects Key Largo. Known as The Cut to locals, The Marvin D. Adams Waterway allows boaters to travel conveniently from the Atlantic Ocean side to the Gulf of Mexico in minutes. The structures on the property are likely the oldest original residential homes still intact and in use on all of Key Largo.
Guests who rent Historic Shadow Point will enjoy many extras, including the use of paddle boards, kayaks, floating tubes, life jackets and snorkel equipment located on-site. Shadow Point has a private sandy beach for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, and launching kayaks into the beautiful waters of Largo Sound. Also available for use are a gas barbeque grill and equipment. There are several shady spots to have evening dinners outside or fun picnics under the Gumbo Limbos. There are two fully stocked kitchens, one in each house. There is even a full laundry facility in the Cottage.
Please visit Historic Shadow Point's Website for more detailed information on the property and booking. Watch this space, the team at Caribbean Catering is always sniffing out new venues!
We have found a brand new wedding venue in Key Largo! A newly remodeled and gated – 5 bedroom, 4 bath house directly on the bay. The house is named, CASA de IVY. The house features an infinity pool, large sandy beach, and a newly constructed dock. CASA de IVY is decorated in a West Indies décor, with dark hardwood floors and red and yellow accents throughout the house. The kitchen is on the 2nd floor and features a large center island which seats 10. Just outside the kitchen is a 1200 sq ft covered lanai with travertine tile. From the lanai and every one our 6 French doors is an
We did our first event there this past weekend and the property is well suited for a wedding or event. There is a large beach with plenty of room to accommodate dinning space and ceremony. It has an amazing sunset view being on the bayside with a huge unobstructed view of the water. The pool also has a large deck space perfect for dancing. Check out these pictures!

The actual wedding ceremony itself is really the most important part of the day. This is what all of your guests have come to witness and the reason for the celebration! So don't forget to really consider the design of your ceremony. When having your ceremony on the beach there are few more things to consider, Caribbean Catering has a few tips for your beach wedding ceremony.
Many couples who opt for a beach ceremony are not sticking with traditional and do not require their guests to sit as guests of the bride and guests of the groom. Open seating makes it easy for your guests and keeps an inviting atmosphere. Since it is an outdoor affair guests will have more than one entrance to the ceremony area so keep it simple. Most only reserve the front rows for immediate family who will be walking down the aisle, such as parents and grandparents. In this case you won't need ushers although if you are going to have programs be sure to assign someone the duty of handing them out. Also consider getting sign to let people know that they can sit on either side, like this one.
There are also several option for your seating design. Here are some of the set ups we have done for our couples;
When choosing your seating design consider the size of the property you are working with and the amount of guests you will need to seat to be sure there will be space for your desired layout. Most of the properties we work with lend themselves to a particular style of ceremony layout and we are more than happy to do a walk through with you to go over your options at your desired venue.
When having a beach wedding you may want to think about getting an archway of some type for your ceremony. Some properties have landscaping and structures built in to frame your ceremony. If it doesn't, an arch really adds that drama to your ceremony design and gives you a nice focal point. There several different styles available, these are some that we have done in the past.
You will want to carefully consider your footwear for both you and your guests. Outdoor surfaces like grass or sand can be difficult to navigate in pumps. Wear wedges or flats for an easier time and be sure to let your guests and wedding party know what the appropriate footwear will be. On grass or sand a fabric aisle runner usually won't work out all that well. It can easily catch on your shoes since the surface is uneven. Sturdier constructed pieces tend to lend themselves better to outdoor ceremonies like bamboo or boardwalk.
Beach wedding ceremonies may have different aspects to consider than a traditional ceremony but are always beautiful. Who wouldn't like sand between your toes and a beautiful keys sunset as your ceremony backdrop? Contact us at Caribbean Catering for more ideas on your beach wedding ceremony.
