The Castaway House in Islamorada is one of our favorite venues for events here in the upper keys. The property is well suited for both a large and small event. It has a huge beachfront overlooking the sparkling Atlantic Ocean with a white sandy walk-in beach, which as you may or may not know is a rare thing down here. It also has plenty of space for parking in the front and a shaded area on the beach for the ceremony. The house on the property is a super cute honeymoon cottage, that not only looks like a boat but actually is a boat! This property has a long history here in Islamorada making it a historic wedding venue. Here is a little bit about how this boat house came to be, a story told to me by Lisa Bradeen who is involved with the Islamorada Historical Society.
Clara Maw Downey first bought the boat and put it on her property of The Olney Inn. It then blew onto Preston Street during Hurricane Donna and Jim Gilmore (who had purchased the property already) dragged it on rollers to where it is today and used it as a winter house for his Family. Mr. Gilmore was from Kalamazoo, Michigan and was the owner of Gilmore/Foyt Racing Team, as in AJ Foyt, Indy Winner 3 times and owned Clear Channel stations and was big in the broadcasting industry. The Gilmore Family still owns the property today.
Mr. Gilmore was involved with the original World Wide Sportsman with George Hommell & The Green Turtle Inn. Doris Hommell was the caretaker of the property for many years. She bought the house that Joe & Debbie live in for $1.00 from Mr. Gilmore and turned it into a Flower/Nursery shop which was very successful in the 80's. I worked with Doris for 5 years during that time. It was a glorious time decorating all the homes & restaurants in Islamorada.
President Truman and his wife with their friend & guest, Edward R Morrow vacationed there in the late 50's. President Truman fished with Bucky Stark then. Mrs. Truman did not fish.
The property is for sale as of present for 5 million.

Always with an ear to the ground, we have discovered an amazing new Florida Keys wedding venue. This gated, 2.5 acre property boasts a beautiful sandy beach directly on the Gulf of Mexico. Which means, Sunsets!!! We love a sunset wedding and there are much fewer properties available on the bayside with a sunset view, making this a gem. The property is also nestled in beautiful palm tree and hardwood hammocks dotted with bougainvillea.
The estate has three residences on the property. The best part is that you can choose to rent out just one or all three. They are flexible and have a lot of different options available. From one day or one night rentals to three day or weekly rentals. Which is a huge benefit for a lot of our out of town brides who would prefer to not rent for a full week as many other rental properties require.
The property also has parking for up to 75 vehicles, which is a huge bonus many venues have the space for a large event but no parking to match.
A property representative is available 24/7 during your stay.
The option of booking a massage, yoga and even a Wedding Etiquette course during your stay is also a nice amenity.
For more information about this venue please visit their website or contact us at Caribbean Catering.
There are so many great wedding venues available in the Florida Keys. This week I would like to spotlight a couple of our favorite venues in the Upper Keys. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing an appropriate venue for your wedding. Before we get to our Spotlight Local Wedding Venues here are some things to consider when choosing a venue: 1. Your Wedding Style: Do you dream in tuxedos and ballgowns? Then choose a venue that will reflect this style it will save you money in the long run since you won't have to spend as much in transforming the space to suit you needs.
2. Size appropriate for you anticipated guest list: Expecting 300 people? Then be sure to check with your venue on their maximum capacity.
3. Ease of accessibility: When having a destination wedding you will want to take into consideration the proximity and availability of accommodations and goods and services for your guests.
One of our favorite locations here in the upper keys is Ocean Pointe Suites. It has 60 acres of property tucked away on the Oceanside in Tavernier. It is in close proximity to shopping and restaurants and boasts 170 spacious suites. This means that in most cases all of your guests will be able to stay on property. The pool will be one big family reunion! There is also a bar and restaurant on-site and boat dockage available.
The property also has a beautiful sandy beach perfect for a ceremony or even for the reception itself. There is also a covered space near the beach where many of the receptions are catered following a beach ceremony. The property has an affordable site fee and you get a lot for your money.
1. Covered space: A commodity down here for a beach wedding. Short of springing for a tent you won't find this anywhere else.
2. Fans: This space has built in ceiling fans, so clutch on a hot day down here.
3. Lighting: Lighting is also built into this space so another way to save.
4. Tables & Chairs: Depending on how many guests you have they can accommodate dinner seating for up to 40 people.
5. They take care of the bar: For a reasonable price your full bar service is covered. No guessing if you will run out of booze or hauling it all with you.
With all of these great points for this local venue, there is still more. It has an absolutely lovely view and the staff is friendly, accommodating and a pleasure to work with.
Here are some images from recent events at Ocean Pointe Suites.

We have found a brand new wedding venue in Key Largo! A newly remodeled and gated – 5 bedroom, 4 bath house directly on the bay. The house is named, CASA de IVY. The house features an infinity pool, large sandy beach, and a newly constructed dock. CASA de IVY is decorated in a West Indies décor, with dark hardwood floors and red and yellow accents throughout the house. The kitchen is on the 2nd floor and features a large center island which seats 10. Just outside the kitchen is a 1200 sq ft covered lanai with travertine tile. From the lanai and every one our 6 French doors is an
We did our first event there this past weekend and the property is well suited for a wedding or event. There is a large beach with plenty of room to accommodate dinning space and ceremony. It has an amazing sunset view being on the bayside with a huge unobstructed view of the water. The pool also has a large deck space perfect for dancing. Check out these pictures!

Our new Cuban themed menu is perfect for an Islamorada event. With the Caribbean influences in this part of the country it is a perfect match. Not only is the food delicious but there are many possibilities for decor with in this theme as well. Colorful, fun and tropical are perfect decor elements for a wedding or event here in Islamorada.
This event that we did recently totally captured the look. White linen, rattan chargers, bamboo chairs and bright multicolored napkins. Square tables give a regal feel with the extra space they provide. Centerpieces consist of cigar boxes filled with tropical stems and greens, and vintage tequila bottles used to serve cold water. Brightly colored and tropical yet still classy and elegant.
Our Cuban themed menu consists of the following delicious dishes:
Mojo pulled pork - The pork is slow cooked until it is fall apart tender and marinated in garlic, olive oil and citrus juices. A wonderful combination of tangy and savory flavors.
Tostones - Twice fried and pounded plantain chips, that are crispy and golden brown, served with a citrus garlic dipping sauce.
Avocado and tomato salad - Sweet ripe tomatoes and creamy avocado slices dressed in a light vinaigrette, salt and pepper.
Rice and black beans - A Cuban classic and tasty combination of savory black beans paired with perfectly cooked white rice.
At the bar serve some traditional Cuban cocktails. The Mojito, it's combination of sweetness, refreshing citrus, and mint flavors is intended to complement the potent kick of the rum, and has made it a perfect summer drink. The Cuba Libre, a highball made of cola, lime, and dark or light rum. The Havana Club Daiquiri, ingredients are rum, citrus (typically lime juice), and sugar. Again light and refreshing and decidedly Cuban, the drink is named for a small beach village in Cuba.
Consider hiring a cigar roller. To provide cigars and roll cigars in person for all of your guests. We often work with Rodriguez Cigars out of Key West. They do a great job and have a beautiful display for events.
Contact Caribbean Catering to book your next event and we can help you with more menu and theme ideas like this one!
Money Saving Wedding Tips
When planning your wedding it really is staggering how quickly costs can add up. There are so many elements to consider for your wedding from the flowers to the dress, there are ways to save. I have some great money saving wedding tips. It is possible to have a beautiful wedding that your guests will always remember on a budget.
Sit down with your partner and decide on your top five priorities. It is so easy to get caught up in the details and your families expectations along the planning process but just remember that this is supposed to be about YOU! So if your favorite DJ is a must, you need to have peonies or if you already have that perfect designer dress in mind get that down first so you can decide where it is most important to spend your money.
The biggest money saver of all is keeping your guest list small. Most of your costs will be per person or per table and the more people the more money. The difference in cost of 100 to 150 is quite significant. Start by making three lists; the short short list: those people who must be in attendance, the short list: those people who you would like to attend and the dream list: the list of anyone you can possibly think of. Try keeping the number low by refraining from inviting children or coworkers. Only invite spouses and significant others not casual dates. Another great option for keeping your numbers down is, get out of town! If you are getting married where you were born and raised you may feel obligated to invite everyone and their brother. Consider doing a destination wedding so you won't have to invite all the neighbors. A great rule of thumb is don't invite more people than you can spend at least one minute with each. If you invite 300 people it would take 5 hours to spend one minute with each one! Also consider keeping your bridal party small. You'll save on bridesmaids / groomsmen gifts and flowers. In addition it will save you a ton of precious time on your wedding day when comes to taking all your photos.
An important part of any celebration and in many cases one of the most expensive. There are a couple of options to save here. Consider doing a signature drink rather than a full open bar. We often do Vodka Key Lime Coolers or Tropical Rum Punch. Find a venue that will let you bring in your own booze, rather than paying per drink or per person for an open bar. Then find deals at your local liquor stores or bulk bargain stores like Costco or BJ's. Another cost saver is skip the champagne toast, 50% of people who are served champagne for a toast don't even touch it, 25% will have a sip just because it is there. People will already have their drink of choice in hand for the toast. Keep the bubbly at the bar and serve it only to those who ask for it.
Flowers can be a big cost for many brides between the centerpieces, accent arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres it adds up fast. Stick with flowers that are in season and local at the time of your wedding. If you have a specific flower or fruit in mind that you want to use, do your research on seasons before picking your date. Consider using bud vases, not only are they beautiful they require a lot less stems than huge arrangements and can easily be assembled by your bridesmaids or coordinator, no florist necessary. Choose flowers with a large bloom, the bigger the flower the less stems needed for a large arrangement or bouquet. Use non-floral accent pieces like lanterns, driftwood, candles or vintage books and suitcases.
Huge tiered cakes with intricate and custom designs can break the budget. If you really still want the look of the fancy cake, get a small one just for cutting and serve your guests a regular sheet cake. Steer clear of sugar flowers. While they are beautiful it takes great skill and lots of time to make them. Use fresh flowers instead. Consider buying regular sheet cakes and stacking them yourself using baking dowels from your local craft store, then decorate with fresh flowers.
There are loads of websites out there now like tradsey.com, oncewed.com and preownedweddingdress.com where you can find great deals on pre-worn or sometimes even brand new designer dresses at a fraction of the cost. Consider selling your dress on one of these sites to recoup some of the cost. Also give out your details on designers websites for special sales and trunk shows.
Fly for free! Do your wedding spending on a card that will rack up airline miles so you and your new spouse can fly for free to your honeymoon. Do some research on airlinecreditcards.com. This day in age most couples getting married already have all their housewares. Rather than a registry at a home goods store ask your guests to contribute to your honeymoon with a site like honeyfund.com.
There are lots of money saving wedding tips! My last tip: hire a professional. With years of experience working with their bride's budgets they will have lots of cost saving tips and ideas for you. They also have relationships with vendors and can help you save there too. Call us at Caribbean Catering for more information on your wedding and how we can help you stay in budget!
Planning a wedding away from home is attractive to couples for many reasons these days. Many decide to forgo the traditional and sometimes more expensive wedding for a more intimate affair in a favorite vacation spot. Here are just a few reasons to have a destination wedding;
1. Be Unique
less than 25% of all couples getting married have a destination wedding. So tie the knot somewhere special rather than your hometown spots where everyone you know has already booked.
2. You have friends and family....everywhere
If your friends and family are all traveling to get to you anyway might as well make it somewhere pretty.
3. Spend some quality time
With a destination wedding you will be able to extend the celebration. spend at least a few days with your friends and family making memories, rather than a quick five hours. Bonus: Using a roomblock and discounted group rate at your destination everyone can get a discounted vacation. What's more fun than some downtime to relax and connect with friends and family.
4. Streamline Costs
Surprisingly is can be easier to keep costs in check in a faraway locale. Two reasons: One, you’re likely to have a smaller guest list (the best way to save $$ on your wedding is to keep the list short); and two, your choices are less copious than they might be at home. At home you’d be visiting a half-dozen florists and designers being tempted by more lavish (and pricey) options.
5. Make the Planning Easier (yes, Easier)
Planning a wedding can quickly turn into a logistical nightmare at home or away. Caribbean Catering provides a service that will take all the leg work out of the planning process for you. We have all of the resources you need to plan your whole wedding, no stress.

There are so many wedding venues down here in the Florida Keys. They all have different pros and cons and when choosing a venue there are many things to consider. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing wedding venues in Islamorada;
An obvious one but important. You don't want to kill your budget with the venue, there is plenty more to spend on from there. Otherwise you will end up with a great location and surroundings but you will have to skimp on things like decor, flowers and food.
You will need to have at least a rough estimate of how many guests you will be having because most all locations will have a maximum amount of people aloud on property. These limitations are for good reason, not only for safety but in some cases it just plain won't work.
When having a destination wedding here in the keys this will involve travel for your guests. Make sure it is with in a reasonable distance from accommodation that will suit your guest's budget. Also be sure there is ample parking available at your desired location. If you are having the ceremony at a separate location be sure it is within a reasonable driving distance and try to account for traffic. Make the drive yourself a few times to clock the time. Another factor here in the keys is oceanside vs bayside. While you will still see a colorful sky at sunset time on the oceanside you do not get a full on sunset like you do on the bayside. So if sunset is must then you will have to consider bayside properties.
Think about what type of event you want. Will your wedding be formal, informal, traditional or non-traditional. You want your venue to reflect this style.
Here are some photos of some of our favorite wedding venues in Islamorada:

Planning a wedding can be stressful on so many levels and that is why more and more couples are feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of it all. The process can be a lot to deal with, between stressing over the money and who will pay for what, who to invite and who not to invite and feeling obligated to consider opinions about the wedding from seemingly everyone you know (and don't sometimes!). If when you think of planning a traditional wedding and all you see is a stressed out bride, anxious mothers and enough family dysfunction for a week long special on Jerry Springer, then I'm sure running off to an exotic location has crossed you mind! So here's 10 reasons to leave it all behind and elope in the Florida Keys:
It's a romantic to pack up and get away to a beautiful place with the one you want to marry! Bring along a few close friends and family and it will certainly be a trip to remember.
A traditional wedding with all the bells and whistles can cost a pretty penny. With an intimate wedding you can use all that extra money for so many things when starting a new life together, the possibilities are endless.
Location, Location, Location
Keeping your wedding day just between you your groom a select group of friends and family rather than a traditional wedding you will be able to use those savings to hop on jet and head straight to the keys, and stay at the best places we have to offer in Islamorada. The Keys are a great place for a romantic get away and an intimate wedding celebration. With sparkling turquoise waters, lush tropical gardens, warm sunny days, beautiful beaches and breath taking sunsets it's the perfect location to elope.
Leave the Drama
That's the beauty of it really, forget all of the drama of the whole process. Pack your bags and head south! There are elopement packages available to handle all the little necessities. All you have to do is show, up be married and enjoy the keys lifestyle.
A Big Wedding isn't For Everyone
For many of us it is just not in the budget and for others the thought of having to walk down the aisle with hundreds of eyes upon their backs seems more like a bad dream than a wedding day. If it is a second or third marriage it may feel excessive to ask all of your friends and family to shell out again for gifts and wedding expenses.
Enjoy the Celebration
Many times the bride and groom are so wrapped up in greeting guests, taking photos and being ushered from one tradition to the next that they barely have time to actually enjoy the day. It ends up flying by in a haze and over before you know it. Instead enjoy a holiday that starts with an intimate wedding with your closest loved ones and then spend your days enjoying our turquoise waters or soak up some sun and sand on a private beach.
No Dress Code
There's no need for tuxedos and over priced dresses in the Florida Keys. Our motto here is; no shirt no shoes no problem. So pack your flip flops, we've already left the traditional behind so wear whatever makes your heart content.
Focus on Each Other
So many times the planning process and wedding day itself can end up becoming all about everyone accept the most important; the bride and groom! You will have the time to enjoy each others company and focus on beginning your life together.
You will basically be on your honeymoon the minute you arrive here! As soon as the papers have been signed just enjoy being alone with the one you love.
We can have a package just for you to include all the necessary details on the documentation, officiant, and small celebration to follow. No stress, no drama. Contact us at Caribbean Catering for information on having an elopement wedding in the Florida Keys.
Lighting is a very important element to any event whether it be indoors or out. Your lighting will set the mood and has the ability to truly transform your event space. When it is done right it makes everything look better, even your guests! Use it to highlight details and define spaces. At an outdoor event they become even more critical because once it is dark out this will be your main light source not just for mood lighting but for being able to see what's on your dinner plate!
Market lights or bistro lights are great for illuminating dance floors and dinning areas. They can illuminate a large area and create a charming warm ambiance that can be admired by night.
Here is your chance to play with color. Led lights can easily be matched to any color in your pallet. They are also one of the most inexpensive ways to transform a space. When placed properly they can really take your design to the next level.
This lighting element can be used to highlight details, such as the cake or floral centerpieces.
Lanterns & Candle Light
There is an endless possibilities when it comes to lanterns and candles with so many styles to choose from. They add a soft warm glow to your tablescapes and create perfect mood for dinner conversation.
Hire a Professional
When thinking about lighting many of us think that we can take this on ourselves and save a few bucks. In the end it will be more than worth it to have a professional do the handle it for you. Not only will they have a creative eye to really use your event space well, they also have all the necessary tools and equipment to install everything properly. We have seen so many times people who have decided to do their own lighting and end up either blowing a fuse with no options of being able to replace it and therefore ending up with no light or they don't have enough lights. You also don't need any guests falling off a ladder trying to string up lights for you! Check our facebook for more ideas on lighting, or contact us at Caribbean Catering.

When planning a wedding or event in the Florida Keys , or anywhere for that matter, your venue is likely your fist big decision. It is an important one as well, it will set the foundation for the style of your party. Here in the keys, events have a huge focus on our beautiful environment and sparking clear waters. That's why we come here right? This new venue really captures the essence of the Florida Keys and perfect for a nautical theme. There really are so many hidden unique places to have your wedding or event here in the Florida Keys and this new marina in Tavernier is a great venue.
Mangrove Marina is a several acre waterfront property tucked away on the bayside in Tavernier. Which gives you your sunset, in other words magic time for your photos! The cove where this marina is located is considered a "hurricane hole." It is protected by mangroves and provides protection from wind and lovely quiet environment.
The wedding or event venue has a fully renovated waterfront deck and bar area which is the perfect location for dinner and dancing. It comes with a few built in bonuses! The dinning area is pre-strung with overhead bistro lighting. Which will provide you with a great ambiance. The tables provided by the venue are beautifully hand crafted rustic farm tables. What a steal that is! Potted palms and tropical plants are tastefully arranged around the dinning and bar area. A water front gas powered fire pit, surrounded by adirondack chairs is a perfect spot for guests to relax and chat near the bar. The property also has a food truck serving up gourmet dishes, perfect for a late night snack or your rehearsal dinner.
Mangrove Marina also has a fleet of Aqua Lodges! They are fully renovated houseboats where you and wedding party can stay on property. They are super cute, I what to live on one! Impeccably redecorated and such a unique experience for your guests. It will give you the opportunity to fully enjoy the keys lifestyle. They sleep 4 adults comfortably or 4 adults and 2 children and are priced at $1500 per week.
Mangrove Marina has a great atmosphere and will make a great venue for a wedding or private event. With all of the of the built in amenities this venue has to offer it is sure to be a big hit with both your guests and your budget! For more information on this and other Florida Keys wedding and event venues contact us at Caribbean Catering.
One of the reasons I love a destination wedding is that it gives you, your family and friends they opportunity to have a week long wedding. The wedding is going to be amazing and all the careful planning that you've been doing for a whole year is finally coming together. Your vision is coming to fruition. Before you know it, it will all be over in a matter of hours! A destination wedding in a place like Islamorada is a great way to take a page out of Hindu tradition and celebrate your union for several days! You and your closest family and friends can rent a house for a week and split the cost, making it affordable for everyone. One of my favorite spots for your week long wedding here in the Keys is Southern Diversion Estates South.
This stunning beach front estate sleeps 20 people and has 5 1/2 bathrooms. It would come out to only $165 per night per couple! You and your closest friends and family can all stay for week in this amazing mansion, what could be better!?
Week Long Wedding - Activities
During your stay there are so many activities you can plan for you and your family to do leading up to the wedding. The Florida Keys is the fishing capital of the world so why not get all the guys together for a fishing trip or two?

Between relaxing at the pool and private paddle board yoga sessions consider taking a dip with the dolphins. A once in a lifetime experience for many and something your guests will never forget. Some good spots for a swim with the dolphins, Theater of the Sea and Dolphin Research Center.
Watersports and Eco tours are another amazing activity for you and your family. Take a lesson in one of the newest water sports in the keys and go Kite Surfing or wake skating. Take a guided paddle board, jet ski or kayak tour through the mangroves. Get a birds eye view of the keys and go parasailing!
A week long wedding celebration of fun in the sun will help bring you and your family closer together. It will also give you the time to relax and prepare for the big day, rather than coming into town the day before and trying to tie together all your loose ends in one day. When planning your wedding keep in mind the benefits of the week long wedding and spread the joy for a whole lot longer than one day. Contemporary Weddings are a symbol of love and commitment between the bride and groom. However, historically weddings were more like a business transaction between two families and rarely for love. Most weddings were arranged in order to form a beneficial alliance. So therefore, since the bride was meant to represent her family the dress was meant to show her family in the best possible light. Especially in terms of their wealth and social status.
Peasant brides did not purchase a new dress, they simply wore their finest gown. They were not usually white, in fact they were often black! Brides of wealthy families wore rich fabrics in bold colors and layers of fur to show the wealth and social status of her family and guests. Blue was a rather popular color for early wedding dresses as it was said to represent purity. The dark color also hid stains and imperfections well.
Prior to the Victorian era white was not a common color for a wedding dress. Although there are a few documented instances including Phillipa of England in 1406 and Mary Queen of Scots in 1559. Wearing a white wedding dress on your wedding day did not become popular until 1840, following the marriage of Queen Victoria. She wore white to incorporate lace that she highly prized. Their official wedding portrait was widely published and inspired many other brides to choose white in accordance with the queen. A few years following Queen Victoria's marriage, early women's magazines and publications declared white was the best shade for a bride.
From then on if you were someone, you wore white to your wedding. Even still white was a hard color to achieve and preserve in that time, so only the most wealthy could afford a white dress. With that said, you could hardly consider the dresses white, or even eggshell, as bleaching technology of the day was poor.
During the great depression the white wedding dress went by the wayside, as people were hit with hard times. Often wearing just their Sunday best regardless of color. Following the economic boom of the second half of the 20th century once again white became the color of choice. Such as the iconic weddings of Grace Kelly and Princess Diana.
Today Brides can choose from hundreds of colors and styles, however in western weddings white, ecru and ivory are still the most popular. About 75% of the wedding dress market is accounted for by strapless gowns. However we are starting to see a resurgence of sleeved dresses and those more like the styles of the early 1900's.
How do you feel about a colored wedding dress? Will you go strapless or go with a sleeve? Picking the dress can feel daunting with so many choices. Just be glad that today you marry for love and you get to love the dress too!

Pantone is an institution when it comes to color. I always look to their color forecasting for the year to get some great ideas for design. It is a great source of inspiration when styling anything from your home to your wedding. Here are the 2015 pantone inspired wedding colors.....
These shades all have a very elegant and sophisticated feel. Perfect for creating that rustic vintage feel for an outdoor wedding. These are some weddings we have done recently that have used some of my favorite colors here.
Islamorada translates to Purple Isle, so I love pops of purple at our weddings down here. Our waters are sparking blues and purples so it really compliments the atmosphere here in the Keys.
This vibrant color makes for a deliciously bold statement color. It also has a great tropical feel to go with your palm trees and blue water.
This innocent and sweet tone of blush pink really completes that vintage chic theme. It is very romantic and sweet and will look great with lots of warm candle light.
This stunning and Caribbean blue is a classic tone for weddings here in the Florida Keys. It is the color of our beautiful waters so will always make a beautiful accent color for a beach wedding.
This lovely hue of pale yellow makes an excellent match with tones of gray. The cool grays with pops of sunny yellow make for an inviting yet elegant atmosphere.
This palette of pantone inspired wedding colors gives the nod to outdoor wedding, rustic and bohemian look and that are a huge style in the wedding industry right now. So how would you make use of these colors and how many colors should you use? Well it comes down to personal taste, however some I feel some are bold enough to ride solo, while others can be paired beautifully. What’s your opinion?
